“In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. He boasts about the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord. In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. His ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by him; he sneers at all his enemies. He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.” He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.” His mouth is full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent. His eyes watch in secret for his victims; like a lion in cover he lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. He says to himself, “God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees.””Psalm 10:2-11 NIV (New International Version)
Watching or reading the news can be awfully depressing at times. It seems that every other article something bad happens and it usually happens because somebody acts wickedly towards another person. Scientists and philosophers would deny that man is accountable for their wicked actions and that it is the environment or the way they were raised that is to blame. I don’t take any stock in that for the truth about man is found in the Word of God, the Bible. The truth is that because of the first man’s sin, all man was the tendency to do evil.
Even though we all have the capacity to do evil, there are many who practice it on a day to day basis. What does the wicked person look like? He is one who takes advantage of those who can’t take care of themselves; and when they do so, they boast of their achievement. They have no guilt over their actions because they believe they are accountable to no one, even to God. They believe that they are above the standard of justice that was set by God. They are full of greed and always on the look out for the weak and do everything in their power to make them stumble in their ways, to make them like they are.
Does that description remind you of anyone you might know? Maybe people you see on television, or maybe people you might know? They may at first be the more successful ones but such people should be avoided and to follow their examples followed only lead to ruin. Even though, at first, they seem to be successful in the world, this is only for a moment. The chronically sinful fool themselves into believing that they is no God. The time will come however when God will take them into account for all the evil that they have done.
What is the believer to do with such wicked people? We must beware not to follow in thier ways for the Lord sees all things. Yet, we are not called to leave them to their fate. Instead we are to show them that there is a better life than to live in wickedness. That better life is to love God by believing in His Son Jesus. We show this is better by walking in righteousness and being successful according to what God has instructed through His Word. It is then up to them to decide whether turn away from their old way. Let us pray that they do.
