No Fear, God Has Your Back

“Be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.”

Joshua 1:9 (King James Version)

Was there ever a time in your life that you were given a certain job to do but you were too afraid to follow through with the task?  Many of us, at some time or another, have had moments of fear and anxiety over the work that  God has placed before us.  What causes us to have these fits of anxiety?

One of the reasons is our perspective of the assignment we are given.  From our vantage point, it seems too daunting of a task to do.  We feel limited in our skill sets and believe that we aren’t qualified to do the job right.

Which leads to the second cause for fear: our desire to do the task perfectly.  If we can’t do the job the way we want it, then we don’t even try to do it because we are afraid to fall short of our expectations.  It is our pride that compels to be afraid to fail; none of us want to look bad if the job becomes a flop.

Let us consider the words of the Lord that He spoke to His servant Joshua.  Joshua was about to embark in what seemed to be an impossible task: the conquest of the land of Canaan.  We can imagine all the anxiety that he must have felt as he gazed across the Jordan River seeing the vastness of the land and wondering about the many powerful nations that he and the Israelites had to face.  Joshua must have thought, “How on earth am I going to defeat them by myself?!”

The answer God gave to Joshua’s question was that he couldn’t do it on his own.  Indeed it was too much for one man to conquer an entire land.  That was why God told Joshua that he would not be alone in this task; the Almighty God would be with him as he does the Lord’s work.

This truth undoubtedly gave Joshua the courage and strength that he needed to complete his mission.  He understood that if God was on his side, then nothing can stand against him.  Joshua believed as truth that his God was far bigger and more powerful than any army that was in Canaan.

What about you?  Do you believe that God is with you when you do His work?  If you do then draw strength from this truth and move forward with the tasks without fear.

If you pause because you are afraid to fail, submit your pride to the Lord.  Accept that failures are bound to happen when we are doing the Lord’s work.  Instead of focusing on the failures, focus on God and see what it is that He would have you learn from the failings and draw strength from them.

As you gaze upon the vast mission which the Lord has set before you and you wonder how on earth you are going to do this; consider what God said to Joshua.  He promised to His people that He would never leave them and He will always be by their side.  Therefore let us cross the boundary to our mission knowing confidently that God has our back.
