Understanding Eternity

“Look unto Me, and be ye saved all the ends of the earth; for I am God and there is no one else.”

Isaiah 45:22 (King James Version)

We live in a world that is focused on eternity.  What will happen to us when we die?  There are many theories that people have come up with.

Some say that when we die that is the end of it all.  With that in mind, they say, we ought to live our lives to the fullest doing whatever we want to do.  They also suggest that if this world is all that there is, we should make an effort to make this world a better place.  The problem that I have with this thinking, while noble in nature, it ignores the fact that people are more inclined to behave selfishly than for the good of others.

Another theory that is out there is that when we die it is not the end but a transition.  In this state of being, your past life is judged and the works you did determines your destiny.  If you met all the requirements you enter a higher state of existence.  However, if you fall short, you are given a do over and given a new life so that you could do better in meeting the requirements to achieve that higher state.  The issue that I have with this is that it doesn’t specify how many good works it takes to reach the desired goal.

I have just touched on only two of the many theories that are out there about eternity and I don’t want to bore you with describing each one.  The problem with all these ideas is that they are just theories, there is no proof to back up their claims.  There is no proof because people who made these theories have never came back from death to confirm their ideas on the subject.

Let us consider therefore the verse from Isaiah.  God Himself is speaking to the nations of the world through the words of His servant Isaiah.  He reveals to us that when we come to Him, we would be saved.  Now, we must ask, “What do we need saving from?”

The Bible is very clear when it discusses eternity.  There are only two places that person will go when they die; they will either go to Heaven with God or to Hell.  The moment the first man and woman disobeyed God’s commands, they ran foul of their Holy Creator and entered into sin.  It is because of sin, humanity is not allowed admittance into Heaven; God is Holy, sin is not.  Therefore there is only one place for people to go since Heaven is closed to us: Hell!

This is the place that we all need to be saved from!  To be in Hell is to be completely separated from the presence of God for all time.  What does that mean?  While we live on this earth we experience God by gazing at the things that He created: the Sun, sky, plants, animals, etc.  When we are separated completely from Him then all that is left nothing; imagine living in a deep black void for all eternity!

Fortunately, God doesn’t want any of us to go to this horrid place.  That is why He sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins so that we would live though Him.  This is the only way to get to Heaven: Believing and accepting the gift of grace God has given through Jesus the Messiah.

Some people may not like this idea, but I believe it to be true.  It is truth because it is spoken by the One who lives eternally: the Lord God.  Therefore, let us turn to God and be saved from Hell and embrace eternity with God!  There is no one else beside Him.
