Under the Shade of God

He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust.  His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Psalm 91:4 (King James Version)

January 24 of this year is a very important date for me.  It was the day that I asked my girlfriend of over two years to be my wife.  Our wedding will be in the winter and I can’t wait for this new transition in my life; it has been something I have been looking forward to for many years.

Yet as the big day gets closer, there are moments that heart begins to fear.  Now don’t get me wrong, I look forward to the day when I am married.  The thing that haunts me is the financial future.

Like many people, I made the mistake of getting myself into financial debt.  Fortunately, through God help, I have been successful in creating a budget for myself and paying off most of the debts I owe.  However, I still have some more financial mountains to climb and when I get married, more mountains would be added.

Being a perfectionist by nature, I like things to be in a certain order.  However that could only work if you are by yourself.  When you become one flesh with another person, you must set aside your personal preferences and seek what would be best for the marriage unit.

So what can I do to deal with this worry?  I look at the verse from Psalm 91 and I begin to understand.  First of all, I am not alone in these challenges; the Lord has promised to provide for my every need.  While my worries seem big and seem rain down hard upon me, I just need to look up and see that my King is sheltering me from the storms of this life.

Finally I am not alone personally.  My bride to be will also be with me to bear the load of the finances.  In order for that to happen, I must humble myself and allow her to help, for that is what God called her to do.

I am not sure what the future will hold, but as long as I trust that my God is with me, then it will be alright.  Forgetting this truth would only allow the worries to drench me through and through.  To prevent this forgetting, I must turn to God constantly like a man walking beside a flowing river as he travels through a parch desert.

What are the things that worry you?  I urge you to submit your cares to the Lord.  Our fears will only hinder us from the life that He would want us to have.  They are like weights on our bodies that wears us down and prevent us from enjoying life.  It is time to take off those weights and walk confidently under the shade of the Lord.

  1. Great post and congratulations! Though the mountains may seem long and hard, God will fight for you (Ex 14:14) . I face my own personal mountain, but I take comfort knowing that God is with me and will guide me with His Word. My one year anniversary is in 4 days! With insight like this from your post, you will be a great leader for your wife. Thanks for the encouragement
