Romans 8:31 (King James Version)
I love watching movies, especially those that have a very good story behind it. One of those movies is “Rocky”, the story of a no name boxer who gets the opportunity of a lifetime: a shot at the world championship. Even though the plot of this film (and the five other movies that came after) is inspiring, there is one element that I believe has a strong correlation with what the Apostle Paul says in Romans 8:31.
As Rocky trains for the big fight, he develops a relationship with a shy pet shop worker named Adrian. At first the two seem like an unlikely pair, Rocky is the macho tough guy who has chip on his shoulder and Adrian is the shy intellectual type who has no confidence in herself. However, as their relationship grows, Rocky’s tough guy persona softens as Adrian expresses her belief in Rocky and in his abilities. Likewise, through Rocky’s love for her, Adrian breaks away from her shyness and is able to speak with her own voice.
In the later films, as Rocky faces even tougher challenges, his belief in himself falters and fear begins to creep in and it prevents him from being at his best. It is only when Adrian comes to his side and encourages him through her belief in him that Rocky’s confidence is restored and he is able to face the challenge without fear. Strength and courage is found when one knows that they are not alone in the fight.
As followers of Jesus Christ, we too face many challenges. We live in a world that is hostile to our Lord and to us who bear His name. With such menacing hostility, it can be easy for a Christian to lose heart and be paralyzed with fear.
When we are consumed with fear, we are unable to move forward in our walk of faith. How can we break this fear and press on? Let us consider the words of Paul in Romans 8:31. Paul reminds us that we are not alone in this struggle. Our Lord and Savior is with us and will give us all we need to stand up against the hardships that we face.
The Almighty is far greater than what the world has to oppose us. Hear the words of God in another passage: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Therefore, let His words give you the courage to stand and move forward in your journey of faith.
However, the days will come when the hardships of this life will be too much for us. When that happens, just like Rocky called for Adrian and she came, cry out to the Lord and He will fly to your side and lift you up with His power. Draw strength and good courage knowing that the Lord is with us and nothing can stand against us.
