For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
Psalm 91:11 (King James Version)
Have you ever had those moments when your anxiety levels were at their highest and stress seems to bring you down regardless of you do? All of us, even followers of Christ, have run into times such as these. What causes us to have such anxiety and what is the cure for all our stress?
We live in a world that is full of dangers. If you ever watch the news you see nothing but bad news, from acts of violence to scenes of cruelty to the weak; man’s depravity knows no bounds. Despite all these dangers that this world has to offer, what really makes us anxious is the thought that such things could happen to us! What compounds this fear is that our future is unknown to us, and no matter how watchful or prepared we are, sooner or later, we will be caught off guard by an evil produced by the world.
So what can we do to combat the stress produced by not knowing the dangers of the future? We find our answer in Psalm 91:11. We are powerless against events that are to come and the trials that are in store for us. However, we do not face these challenges alone.
The Lord God, according to the Psalmist, orders His angels to come to us and to protect us wherever we go. Why would the Almighty do such a thing for us, since we have been nothing but trouble for Him due to our sinful behavior? We may be sinners, but we are also His creation and He loves those whom He has brought into this world. The Lord is like a parent, no matter how much wrong the child has done, those wrongs would never stop the mother or father from loving them still. Proof of God’s love for us was when He sent His Son Jesus to die, so that our sins would be taken away and our relationship with Him restored.
Knowing that God would never leave us to face difficulty alone should encourage the Christ follower to walk forward to the future with confidence. This should also motivate the one who does not yet know God to come and learn more of Him. Now this confidence is not grounded in the fact that we have angels watching over us, but it is founded in the Lord who sent them because of His love for us.
Remember this, the next time an unexpected hardship raises its ugly head. Always remember that the Lord is with you and will never leave you. You and the Lord will face these challenges together and together, you will overcome. For when we are God, we become more than conquerors.
