God’s Plan for the Future

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Psalm 91:9-10 (King James Version)

As the year 2016 comes to an end, new hopes emerge as the new year approaches.  People say that in 2017, things will be different.  They set new goals for themselves and vow to get them accomplished; and they also anticipate that 2017 will be the year that they will achieve true happiness.

Does this sound familiar?  Maybe that is because we thought the same things when 2016 came.  Let me ask you something, did you achieve the happiness that you wanted and were you able to accomplish the goals you set for yourself?  For most people, the answer to that question would be a resounding no.

As much as we do not like to admit it, it is impossible for us to predict the future.  Even with our best made plans, something unexpected will always come around and tear them apart.  Despite all this, we still plan because stepping into the unknown future can be a frightening experience.

Now I am not suggesting that we go into the future without a plan.  The Bible itself tells us that it is foolish to live life without a plan.  It is when we place all our hopes and happiness upon our plans that they become a problem.  That is because our goals can only work if the future goes according to its framework.  However, as I mentioned earlier, it is impossible to mold tomorrow to our plans due to its unpredictable nature.

So if we can’t rely on our plans as the foundation for the future, what can we use to feel secure about tomorrow?  Psalm 91:9-10 gives us the answer.  When we set our hope for the future in the Lord, we have no need to fear the unexpected that tomorrow will bring.  That is because the Almighty knows what the future will bring and already has a plan for it.

We need to remember that God sees time differently.  While we live our lives daily in the present, He sees both the past, present, and the future all in a single glance.  It is also important to realize that time itself was created by God.  Every moment in the past, the present, and even the future was planned out by the Lord for a specific purpose.  Therefore the future can’t surprise Him.

With this in mind, as 2017 quickly approaches, let us make our goals for the new year.  However, when we make them, let us not hold on to them too tightly as a source of our happiness.  Instead, let us place our faith in the Lord God to take our plans for the future and shape them in a way He knows best.  Who knows, He may have something better in mind for us than we could ever imagine.  For the Bible tells us that God wants nothing but the best for His children.

  1. Excellent point about not holding on tightly to our own plans. At times God’s plan may include a tragedy that will be a help to someone else or move us to somewhere else to help someone else or to be a witness to someone else. Other times it may be something great happening that is much better than we would have imagined or asked for. God’s plan is always the best plan for us. We just need to trust Him. Thanks for sharing.
