Fear of Death
If you had a choice to go to a birthday party or a funeral, which one would you choose? Most likely, you would choose the party over a funeral every time; why is that? The idea of death is something that we don’t like to think about. That is because it is something that is unknown to us and we tend to fear what we don’t know.
Death is Evil
Furthermore, death is also evil in our eyes. It is evil because it goes against what God had designed us for. When the Almighty made all life on the earth, death was something that was not part of His plan; He made us to live and not die. The moment mankind disobeyed and sinned against the Lord however, death entered the world of life.
Death is Punishment
All the oppression and wicked acts that exists in this world are the result of death. Although God did not want death to exist, He allows it in this world. He does this to remind us of the evil that we committed against Him. It is our punishment for our willfulness; believing that we knew how to run our lives better than God.
Dealing with Death
How do we deal with the evil that is death? Some people, in their attempt to not think about death, try to pretend that death does not exist for them. As a result, they live their lives as if it is one great big party. People who act this way are only delaying the inevitable.
Words on Death
A good name is better than fine perfume, and the day of death better than the day of birth. It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone; the living should take this to heart. (Ecclesiastes 7:1-2 NIV) The words that the preacher says about death sound awfully depressing. Nevertheless, his words have a great deal of truth in them.
Denying Death is Foolish
We must not fool ourselves about the reality of the world. All of us, myself included, are going to die someday. The one who ignores this fact is foolish in his thinking, for he pretends that the evil of death does not exist. As a result, when death comes knocking at the fool’s door, he is caught off guard and is left in a state of panic.
Accepting Death is Wise
The person who accepts this fact is clear in their thinking and is wise. He accepts the reality of death in this world. So when death comes, he is not surprised but accept it as a part of life in this world. In order to deal with death, one must acquire wisdom which comes from God.
Benefits of Wisdom
What is the benefit of being wise when facing the evil that comes from death? Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun. Wisdom is a shelter as money is a shelter, but the advantage of knowledge is this: Wisdom preserves those who have it. (Ecclesiastes 7:11-12 NIV) Wisdom is a security that prepares us for the dangers of a world that is full of death. It helps us to recognize that if we strive to do what is good, that we will need to endure many hardships because evil resists the good we do.
Who is in Charge
Furthermore, wisdom reminds us of who is in charge in this world and it is not death. When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this; God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future. (Ecclesiastes 7:14 NIV) There are things in this world that are too difficult to explain. However, when we wisdom that comes from God, we have no need to fear the unpredictability that is in the world. Everything that happens in this world, both good and bad, is all apart of God’s master plan.
The idea of death is not a pleasant thing to talk about. However running from it is not the answer; we must accept that are destiny is to eventually die. In the meantime, how we live our lives now will determine how we face this certainty. If we live foolishly, then death is something we will fear always. On the other hand, if we live wisely, according to our faith in God, death is something not to be feared, but it is a gateway to the life that we were meant to have: a life eternal with God.
