Ask and You’ll Receive

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Matthew 7:7-11 (New International Version)

Resisting God’s Help

The Lord knows what we all need, and all we have to do is ask the Lord and He will give it to us with overwhelming abundance.  However, people resist the notion of asking the Lord for anything.   Why do people not ask the Lord for what they need?

Relying on One’s Self

One of the reasons that we don’t ask is because we believe that we do not need the Lord’s help to get what we need.  We believe that through our own ingenuity and skill, we will be able to fulfill our needs.  However this kind of thinking only leads to frustration.

Unfulfilled Need

While we do achieve great things through our skill sets, in the end however, the things that we think we need end up not satisfying us at all.  As a result, we set off seeking other things; like a new job, a new home, or even new relationships or status for example.   Even these pursuits however do not fulfill us.  The truth of the matter is, despite what we think, we truly do not know what we need.

God Does Not Deliver

Another reason that people do not ask the Lord is because once they asked Him before and the Almighty did not deliver.  There are times, when we ask God to meet our needs He sometimes says “No” or “Not Yet.”  When this happens, some believers begin to doubt God, and begin to view Him as someone who is unreliable and cannot be trusted to give us what we need.

God Serving Us

People who think this way have a wrong idea of the Almighty.  They believe that the purpose of God is to give them things and they consume them accordingly.  This kind of thinking is very common in developed countries where believers dwell.

Giving God Respect

This line of thought is not biblical and I would even go as far as to say that it’s heretical.  Who are we to demand things from God?  The Almighty is the creator of the whole Universe, and it is through Him all things are made and without Him nothing is made! With that in mind, we need to stop viewing God as some kind of Divine vending machine and view Him as God who needs to be feared and respected.

Selfish Reasons

So if the Lord is not unreliable, then why are there times He does not give us what we need?  It could be because we ask of God for the wrong reasons.  The Lord only wants what is good for us.  However, if we ask of God out of selfish motivations, then the Lord will not give us what we need, for He knows that if He gives it to us now, it will only cause us more harm than good.

Following God’s Timing

God knows the right time and place when to distribute the things that we need.  Therefore, let us ask the Lord for those things without ceasing, never doubting that God will eventually provide.  The more we pray, the stronger our relationship with the Lord will be, and when we finally receive what we ask for, we will be more satisfied with Him than the thing we asked for.  Nevertheless, sooner or later, the “Not now” will become a “Yes.”  Therefore, let us exercise patience in the Lord.
