Exercising Faith

18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.  19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”  20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:18-20 (New International Version)

Unstoppable Disciples

The disciples of Jesus did many amazing things in God’s name.  They preached the Gospel, healed the sick and even exorcised demons in the name of the Lord.  I can imagine that they felt really good about themselves and believed that they could do anything.

Disciples Stopped

Then one day, as the disciples waited for Jesus to come down from a mountain, a man brought his son to them.  The child was possessed with a demon which would cause the boy to convulse violently.  Having experience in casting out demons, the disciples thought they could handle this problem themselves.  However, no matter how times they tried, the demon did not come out.

Faithless Disciples

Their inability to cast out the demon produced a lot ridicule among the crowd who watched.  Then Jesus returned from the mountain and was briefed on the situation.  At Jesus’s command, the demon left the boy and the child was restored.  The disciples didn’t understand and asked how it was they were unable to cast out the demon.  Jesus explained it was because of their lack of faith.

Not Testing Faith

Faith is something that many people claim to have.  Unfortunately, when they face a difficult situation, they tend to rely more on their own abilities rather than trusting in God to help them.  I suspect that is what happened to the disciples as they tried to cast out the demon from the boy; they relied more on their own skill rather than on God.  Why do people don’t exercise their faith as they should?

Three Reasons to be Faithless

There are three reasons why they don’t put their faith to the test.  Firstly, some of the situations that people face appear too big for them to handle; and they project the size of this crisis so that it seems too big for even God to handle, so they don’t ask for His help.  Secondly, people don’t ask because they feel they can handle the problem by themselves; they are too proud to ask for help from God.  Finally, people don’t exercise their faith because they find it difficult to believe in a being that they haven’t seen before.

Faith is Essential

These excuses for not walking in faith only hinder us in our spiritual walk.  The handy work of God’s power can be seen in every aspect of our lives; the fact that you are alive right now is the result of the Almighty taking care of you.  If we pause and examine the many ways that He has provided for us, we will begin to realize that the Lord is so much bigger than any problem that we might face.  When compared to the might of the Lord, our ability to handle a crisis on our own, pale in comparison.

Faith Strengthens Our Relationship

If we put our faith to the test and trust that God will pull us through, then we will witness amazing miracles which will draw us closer to the Almighty.  Our faith must be exercised daily in order for our relationship with the Lord to strengthen.  Let us turn to God in all things and be champions of faith on behalf of the Lord.
