Good News to the Poor


The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners…” – Isaiah 61:1

When Jesus started out his public career, he quoted this verse as a prophetic description of his mission (Luke 4:16-21).  He spent the next months and years wandering from village to village, declaring a coming and already-arriving kingdom where there was to be freedom and hope and life for the poor and the outcast.  With scandalous self-disregard, he unleashed the power of this kingdom by befriending, healing and serving people that nobody else wanted anything to do with.  His cruel death became the overwhelming, uncontainable victory of the resurrection, the very basis of what he had been preaching and living all along – the message of…
